Fire pit(fall)

We ended our weekend at the cabin with Caleb falling head first into the new outside fire pit.  There was no fire but there had been the day before.  The ironic part?  Scott and my Dad re-vamped the fire pit to make it safe.  It had been a pit that was flush with the deck.  They pulled the ring up and built 3 layers of nice patio brick around the steel ring.  So, we had our inaugural fire at the new cabin on Saturday afternoon.

We were all packed up on Sunday.  I looked outside as the boys had been playing hard outside all morning: climbing log piles, throwing sticks, etc.  There was Caleb.  He was standing next to the new pavers looking over the edge.  I took one step forward to deter him away from his curiosity.  Too late.  In he went.   There was no time to get frazzled.  The coals were still hot under the ash from the previous day.   Reaction set in and we immediately forced his little hands under the running cold tap water for as long as he could tolerate.  Then, we began wet cold compresses.  30 minutes later...Ludington E.R.

The one hand took the brunt of the fall/burn.  Our family pediatrician did the initial "unwrap" yesterday to reveal how things looked.  It was the first time I actually felt ill.  The blisters were huge, specifically the ones at the base of his fingers.  She had to peel apart his little fingers.  The good news:  he's going to heal fine.  It doesn't take away the horrible parent feeling.

We'll be seeing a lot of the Doctor this week as she continues to monitor his healing.  Today she extracted the blisters and removed some skin.  Guess what Caleb did the whole time?  Chatted, laughed his silly laugh, made silly eyes at me, and told her that we felt "all better."

Tomorrow we change the dressing ourselves.  And then have another appointment on Thursday.
He likes to hold up his right hand and say "the big one!"
The day before...

Does anyone need a babysitter?  Scott and I are available.

So sorry to hear this news, but so glad it's not any worse and he'll heal up fine. What a tough trooper!

Don't beat yourselves up! We've had Reese, Jacee and Levi in the ER before checking out concussions when they were little kids (well, can't remember if we took Reese or not, I know I let him fall off the counter into the dishwasher, or else that was the time I dropped him headfirst behind the changing table, I get it mixed up). But look how he turned out!... Well, wait a minute... :)

Your last line about babysitting made me laugh out loud. Glad you can laugh a little about it.

I was so sorry to hear about this Tara. It brought back memories of when Kyle was diving for a football at about age 7 or so. He landed in what we thought were dead ashes of a leaf fire from the previous day... His hands and wrists were severely blistered... We went through the same routine with the doctors, and wrappings and blisters, and you can hardly see any scars today. Sure will be praying for the little guy, though.

Oh man, poor little guy! I was JUST thinking this morning that our dramatic April is over maybe we should try and schedule another play date and then I read this...here's praying for a calmer May!
